ABSTRACT

Developments on metal technology and metal information network metalpass.com are summarized and experiences shared. The website includes metal properties (flow stress and high-temperature properties, etc.), tech resources (e.g. Metal Dictionaries for Tech Terms and Translation, Metal Patents, Software Database and Tech Papers), and business showcase applications (Metal Directory, Product Profile and Tech Profile, etc.). Development processes such as data collection, data categorization and data population are discussed, together with implementations for automatic upload of technical paper, expandable submission of listing in every page of the showcase applications, and web-based mill software suites, etc.

INTRODUCTION

The development of metalpass.com traced back to the year 2000 as the author was working in a steel mill as software engineer. Considering Microsoft Technet very helpful, the author started developing the Technet of the metal industry, the metaltechnet.com. Later, with some business service functions added in to the site, it was renamed as metalpass.com in 2003. The name “pass” has various meanings, such as that in “Grant Pass”, or in “Travel Pass” or “Passport”. In addition, since it hosts quite a number of roll pass suites, to the roll pass designers, “Metal Pass” can be considered as “roll pass” in metal processing. The official launching of the metalpass.com was in the early 2005, after years of development.

The site was planned and developed with Microsoft .Net as coding environment and SQL Server as backend. This decision was made over 1 year before the official release of the .Net. For the successful and efficient development, the author completed all the computer certification classes of MCAD (Microsoft certified Application Developer) for Web development, MCAD for Windows development, and MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator). Together with earlier evening classes, total number of the computer classes that author completed reaches 30. The author tries to relay on the development efficiency to compensate the time spent for the computer training.

The author, as the primary developer of this site, worked in China, Germany and later in USA. The author experienced strengths of various countries such as German engineering, US IT (Information Technology) and Chinese market. Therefore, this site is aimed at combining all those strengths. The author tries to push metalpass.com to be one of the largest web-based metal technology and metal information network, especially steel mill related.
